I really got into fashion because I wanted to create clothes that I didn’t necessarily see in the stores. I’m a creative director and owner of a company called Omi Woods and I make clothing for special occasions with African prints and indigenous textiles. I’m really interested in sustainability. I’m looking and exploring how to make clothing with recycled materials like water bottles. There is so much in the world’s water so it’s nice to be able to divert that and to make beautiful clothing and fashion with it. So a lot of the prints comes from different cultures and they were worn for a purpose, for special occasions like ceremony, for weddings or when people were giving birth. One of the things that I wish I knew when I first started was just the importance of relationships. Sometimes we focus so much on the business and don’t really remember that it’s the relationships that are really going to last throughout your lifetime. When I’m designing for a person I usually just look at them and I look at their body, and I look at their, kind of their vibe and I think: What designs do I have that could fit to them? What prints that I have that really accentuate their skin tone or their hair color and how to weave those together. It’s important to me to be able to make fashion for different kinds of people because we come in different shapes and sizes and sometimes what we see in stores, it doesn’t represent the diversity and the beauty of everyone. I have a lot of international clients. There’s something very special about being able to make something that make someone feel beautiful. It’s nice to be able to craft something that brings meaning and joy and beauty into someone’s life and I think that’s the main reason I love being a fashion designer.
